Born in Kapyego, Kenya, Joseph Chebet earned fame after winning the Boston Marathon and New York Marathon in the same year in 1999. He had earlier won the Amsterdam marathon in 1996. However, this was not an easy feat for him.

A year earlier he had lost both the marathons by mere 3 seconds and was heartbroken, to say the least. Hence, his double marathon win in 1999 was highly celebrated in his home country as well as worldwide.

American 50 km record holder Josh Cox also paid tributes to Chebet on his Twitter. He tweeted, “This one hurts…Joseph Chebet and Moses Tanui were the two guys that always looked out for me…Mine heart is broken today.”

Cox’s followers also joined him in paying tributes to the Kenyan legend. One user shared that Chebet was his neighbor and he loved chatting with him. Other users poured in with their condolence messages, too.
