For most of us, sports are a place of entertainment and celebration. But they often become our passion and become an important part of our lives. When this happens, the sports stars become an inspiration and we get emotionally attached to them. However, like all people, we have to say goodbye to these legends too one day, even if it’s not easy.

Today, the world of Athletics is bidding farewell to one such legend, Joseph Chebet. A veteran Marathon runner from Kenya, Chebet conquered various international events in America and the world. And hence, tributes are pouring in from all directions.

Born in Kapyego, Kenya, Joseph Chebet earned fame after winning the Boston Marathon and New York Marathon in the same year in 1999. He had earlier won the Amsterdam marathon in 1996. However, this was not an easy feat for him.

A year earlier he had lost both the marathons by mere 3 seconds and was heartbroken, to say the least. Hence, his double marathon win in 1999 was highly celebrated in his home country as well as worldwide.

While his success was a testament to his undying grit and determination, it was also a statement to the world that Kenyans are no less. His glory inspired thousands of aspiring athletes, making them believe that they can make the big stage, just like him.

Tributes from fellow colleagues and friends

Chebet’s impact on the sport can be further established by the fact that some of the biggest names from the Athletics world have come forward to pay him tribute. Boston Athletics Association CEO shared, “Chebet was one of the most gracious and happiest champions.

National Olympic Council of Kenya (NOC-K) President Paul Tergat said, “While I am away in Pyeongchang, Korea…I am devastated by the loss of a long-time friend and calm demeanor marathon excellence, Joseph Chebet.”

American 50 km record holder Josh Cox also paid tributes to Chebet on his Twitter. He tweeted, “This one hurts…Joseph Chebet and Moses Tanui were the two guys that always looked out for me…Mine heart is broken today.”

Cox’s followers also joined him in paying tributes to the Kenyan legend. One user shared that Chebet was his neighbor and he loved chatting with him. Other users poured in with their condolence messages, too.
