Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Dies at 51

The basketball court has seen many inspiring stories unfold over the years. Some of them are inspirational, some are emotional but not many are etched in our memories forever. However, today we mourn the passing of a true luminary whose story is not only inspirational but unforgettable. Nikki McCray-Penson, a legendary figure in the sport, has left an irreplaceable void as we bid her farewell at the age of 51. 

A star and an inspiration for women

According to reports, McCray-Penson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and had pneumonia in the past few days. It’s believed she died from possible complications of the disease and her death was announced by Rutgers University on Friday.

Nikki, in her early days, was an assistant coach alongside the esteemed Dawn Staley in South Carolina. It was Staley who saw her potential as a player and encouraged her to actively take part in the sports.

As a player, her brilliance radiated in both leagues, earning her the prestigious title of MVP in the ABL. She secured three well-deserved All-Star appearances in the WNBA while donning the jersey of the Washington Mystics. 

Her prowess also extended beyond national borders, as she proudly represented the United States in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, contributing significantly to the team’s triumphant gold medal victories on both momentous occasions.

The impact of her 1996 Olympics team played a pivotal role in the establishment of the WNBA and ABL. This historic milestone has left an indelible legacy for women’s basketball in America, forever etching McCray-Penson’s name among the sport’s trailblazers.

Beyond her exceptional playing career, Nikki McCray-Penson made significant contributions as a coach. After retiring from professional basketball, she transitioned seamlessly into full-time coaching, demonstrating her innate ability to inspire and motivate.

From leading Western Kentucky to guiding Mississippi State, every program she helmed bore the indelible mark of her influence. Her tenure at Old Dominion University in 2020 saw her steer the team to an impressive 24-6 record. 

This was a testament to her exceptional coaching acumen. Consequently, she earned the well-deserved accolade of Conference USA Coach of the Year.

The team in a statement highlighted how she embodied the true essence of the game and the rewards that can be reaped through unwavering dedication and passion.

In commemorating the life of this remarkable champion, former Mystics coach Mike Thibault said, “She had immeasurable popularity and she always brought joy to those faces who had the privilege of knowing her.
