The 2023 bicycle racing competition of the BC Cup Downhill Series had its first race scheduled amidst the beautiful backdrop of the Big White. Bikers from all across the world enter the competition and winners of the race receive one point which then gets accumulated till the end of the season. The cycling community was in noble spirits, eager to spell the beginning of the season, but a fatal accident changed the entire atmosphere.

Bicycle race ends on a tragic note

Based on the ground reports and statements to the media, a biker met with a fatal crash during the race and people speculate the nature of the track had a role to play in the devastating accident.

The RCMP present at the venue confirmed the death of the young cyclist but ruled out the crash to be criminal in nature. They immediately transferred the case to the BC Coroner’s services, who are now in charge of investigating the incident and ascertain the reasons for the fatal crash. Since the investigation is still ongoing, details of the crash victim have not yet released, but the RCMP confirmed the person was a teen biker. Spectators present at the venue informed the media that the young biker went off course at a sharp corner, unfortunately crashing into a creek bed.

The CEO of the Big White Ski Resort, Peter Plimmer, released a statement on Facebook after the crash that read, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young athlete involved; and further to the entire community of riders that make up the sport of mountain biking. Our sincerest thanks go out to the patrollers, first responders and volunteers that were on scene.”

Erin Waugh, the CEO of Cycling BC the organising committee responsible for the race also released a statement that said: “As the sanctioning body, Cycling BC is working in close collaboration with event organizers at Big White and the local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation of the accident.” The news of the fatal crash has left the members of the cycling community deeply saddened, and the several parents present on the day expressed their condolences and grief for the loss of a young, aspirant athlete.

The BC Cup bandwagon will now move to the picturesque venue of SilverStar Mountain for the next race.
