Diving coach’s triumph in the face of formidable challenges

Cliff Devries, an American diver who is now a diving coach, has risen above all limitations in the face of adversity. His life took a sudden unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with a dangerous adversary, a 6-inch brain tumor.

About two decades ago, the relentless tumor left him paralyzed. It was the worst that could happen to a man whose life was centered around diving. Although this harrowing twist of fate left him completely paralyzed, his staunch desire to get back to what he loved the most made him soar again.

Every year, on his birthday, he defies all odds. Going against all barriers, he climbs up to the diving board and takes a leap of faith. His leap not only defies the limitations that his body has imposed upon him but also the limits of possibility. With the help of his students, he goes up to the diving board and dives into the pool.

Spirits can soar high even when bodies falter 

After the surgery to remove the lethal tumor, he was paralyzed from the neck down. After a lot of struggles, he could regain strength on his left side. But his right side was rendered powerless. Nothing could stop Cliff from chasing what he always loved the most.

“Being around diving has always been a type of support and great type of therapy for me. Being in a pool, it’s exhilarating, and it’s exciting,” said the diving coach in an interview.

In the video, his daughter can be seen jumping with joy and beaming with pride as her father dived. All the students cheered for their coach, from whom they were learning the true meaning of life.
