Levi Wilkins, a beloved firefighter from Norman, Oklahoma, encountered an unprecedented situation that led to a heartbreaking turn. Triumphing over Stage 4 kidney cancer in 2019, his unwavering spirit and zest for life shone brightly. Levi, a 36-year-old courageous firefighter, husband, and father, even returned to the fire department after overcoming his battle.

However, his rock climbing session on Friday resulted in a harrowing outcome. The unfortunate day marked Levi Wilkins facing a sudden rock climbing mishap at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. As the climbing fail showcased severe damage, the brave man was soon met with an untimely end. Tragically, he did not survive the incident, leaving behind his wife, Emily, and three children.

After battling cancer and serving the community, Levi had a life journey that inspired many. His story was one of resilience and determination; as his wife Emily shared, “After beating cancer he lived BIG. He believed every day was a gift.” She described him as an incredible husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Confirming his terrible fate on Facebook, she expressed sadly, “There’s no easy or graceful way to say this.”

On that unfortunate day, a climbing incident near the Narrows Trails at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge led to a call for rescue. Levi Wilkins was among those responding to the call. Norman Mayor Larry Heikkila, who had witnessed his previous battle with health, recalled Levi’s persona of optimism and indomitable spirit. He added how the cancer survivor had a pugnacious kind of style, as he displayed confidence in getting through with success.

Larry added his gloomy insights on Levi’s, stating, “Sudden losses at a young age just don’t make sense.” The Norman Fire Department also made a post on Facebook, narrating their tribute to the marvelous firefighter. “It’s difficult to express just how hard it hit when we learned of Levi’s passing”, the post read, adding, “He lived life to the fullest every day, and everyone who knew him, loved him.” 

Levi’s visible dedication to his job, the fire department, and his community was evident to all. While plans for a memorial are still uncertain, the Norman community and agencies from across the state have paid their tribute. Recognizing his selfless service and enduring spirit, his service as a public servant was praised by many. Mayor Heikkila urged everyone to express gratitude to the firefighters and police officers while they are serving.
