29-Year-Old Ex-UND Hockey Star From Minnesota Swaps Stick for Fishing Rod for a Sentimental Cause

In a unique journey of transition and healing, Lisa Marvin, a former women’s hockey player at the University of North Dakota (UND), has traded her hockey stick for a fishing rod. Hailing from Warroad, Minnesota, Marvin’s life has taken her from the hockey rink to the tranquil waters of Lake of the Woods, where she currently resides in the Northwest Angle. This remote area, bordered by Canada on three sides, has become her sanctuary where she serves as both a fishing guide and a real estate agent.

From the Rink to the Waters: A Fresh Start

The decision to become a fishing guide wasn’t initially planned; it emerged as a natural transition from her former life as a hockey player.

“I needed a break from hockey,” she confessed.

However, life’s challenges have shaped Marvin’s path in profound ways. A severe accident during her time at UND left her with significant injuries. After years of rehabilitation, she persevered and regained her strength, even completing a half-marathon. Tragedy struck again in December 2018 when her younger brother, Max, died by suicide at the age of 19. Max, an avid outdoorsman like their family, had a passion for fishing. He had even completed his first year as a guide.

Honoring Her Brother’s Memory

Lisa Marvin found solace in the tranquil waters of Lake of the Woods, feeling closest to her late brother while fishing. Max’s memory and love for fishing inspired her to embrace the role of a fishing guide, bridging her connection to him through the shared passion. She not only navigates the waters adeptly but also navigates her grief, keeping her brother’s memory alive with each catch.

In honor of Max, Lisa’s family established the Max Foundation to raise awareness about suicide and mental health issues. The foundation’s mission is to support programs that promote mental wellness among youth. Their efforts have raised significant funds and facilitated vital awareness initiatives, including Project 11—a mental health curriculum for students.

To further honor Max’s memory and promote their cause, the Max Foundation will host the inaugural MAX Multi-Species Fishing Derby on Lake of the Woods. With a focus on raising funds for mental health awareness, the tournament emphasizes catch-video-release techniques and underscores the importance of open conversations about mental wellness.
