Virat Kohli Not Thinking About the World Cup

India have registered a series win over West Indies in a three-match T20I series where a couple of youngsters got the chance to play. Navdeep Saini performed well in the series whereas Rishabh Pant scored a half-century in the final game along with the captain Virat Kohli. Although the team management is preparing a team for the upcoming World cup, Virat Kohli said the next World Cup is far away.

“It’s too far away to think about 2023 World Cup. For us, the priority has been always is to be one of the most consistent sides in world cricket. And in the last three-four years we have been able to achieve that. We are the number two side in the world and there’s a good reason for that. Sometimes, we have moved up to the top spot as well,” said captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday.

“You really start planning for the World Cup with 12 months to go. The priority is to keep Indian cricket at the top, play consistent cricket, go out there and win games and that’s the reason why we are one of the top sides in the world,” he added.

Shikhar Dhawan, however, has returned to the squad after recovering from his left thumb injury which he was sustaining from the ICC World Cup. Although he failed to contribute much. However, Kohli said he isn’t concerned about his form.

“He’s an experienced player, and we don’t really look much into T20 cricket, because you need to get on with the game and you will get out at some stage,” Virat Kohli said.

“Fifty over cricket gives you a chance to get into your innings, and we all know the skill set that he has. So the ODI series will give him a chance to ease into things and not necessarily have to go after the bowler all the time. He’s an experienced enough player to know how to build an innings and how to get runs,” shared Kohli.

India will now play a three-match One Day International series and two-Test series, starting from August 8 at Guyana.
