Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was no tennis for months. But now, we are seeing many tournaments being played with some restrictions to prevent the virus from spreading. Unfortunately, one of those restrictions has led to a dispute in a recent match.
One of the measures implemented in some tennis events is the removal of line judges. This is to reduce the number of people on the court and as you can see in the video, it is clearly working.
Unfortunately, the removal of line judges has led to controversy between Damir Dzumhur and Borna Coric at the East European Championships. As you can see in the video, Dzumhur is arguing with the umpire on whether Coric’s serve was in or out which was very clearly out.
Such arguments are very common in tennis. But the removal of line judges at events has led to the accuracy of a call being reduced. And this reduction in accuracy is going to increase the number of arguments we see in any tennis match.
Another event that has decided to remove line judges on most tennis courts is the US Open. Here, the line judges are going to be replaced by electronic line calling on most courts. This is in addition to the many restrictions that the US Open has already implemented.
US Open will certainly want to avoid arguments on the court. But they are going to be worried about something else – the participants at the event. Many players have said that they might skip the event due to the restrictions.
On the other hand, many other players have hi ted their participation at the US Open like Dominic Thiem. And everyone is hoping that more will do so.
