After the 2011 World Cup final, Jayawardene became the first batsman ever to score a century in the final and still ending up losing the match. This was the 6 instance where a player had scored a century in the World Cup final but the very first one in which the player belonged to the losing side.

The Sri Lankans had put up a big score, worthy of a final, giving a target of 275 to the Indians. Jayawardene was the star for Sri Lankans hitting 103* of 88 balls which included 13 fours. It was an excellent innings by a star batsman, consisting of the typical late cuts and lofted drives. But the Indians riding on the match winning innings by Gambhir(97) and Dhoni(91*), finally reached the target with 6 wickets still in hand.

Here is the innings of Jayawardene in the finals.
