Nate Diaz put on a show in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden at UFC 244 when he fought Jorge Masvidal. Although the fight ended controversially, it’s fair to say that Jorge Masvidal completely outclassed Diaz in the fight. Agreed, Diaz can make a comeback in the championship rounds, however, Jorge Masvidal was not slowing down either. So what’s next for Nate Diaz after the disappointing night on UFC 244?

After his long lay off from the sport, Nate Diaz made his UFC return against Anthony Pettis and he won that fight in a quite dominant fashion. However, it has to be kept in mind that Pettis is a former lightweight. Although he had a win over Stephen Thompson, he was getting picked apart by Thompson until the knockout. Hence a win over Pettis does not look so impressive at the welterweight division after witnessing what Masvidal did to Diaz.

Nate Diaz has had much more success in the lightweight division than in the welterweight division. There is a huge power difference between Diaz and other top welterweights. It’s very hard to imagine Diaz beating the likes of Kamaru Usman or Tyron Woodley. Hence a move to lightweight division might work in the favor of Diaz where he has some interesting fights for him.

Conor McGregor‘s trilogy fight is already there on the table for Nate Diaz. At the moment Conor has a fight scheduled for January 18th but UFC has not announced the opponent yet. Although McGregor has his eyes set on the lightweight title, he might jump on board for a fight with Diaz at either lightweight or welterweight.

Other than McGregor, Justin Gaethje is certainly a fun matchup for Nate Diaz. It’s safe to assume that Diaz is not chasing the UFC titles. So if you are considering BMFs in sports, Diaz and Masvidal are not the only ones for sure. In the lightweight division, we have Donald Cerrone, Justin Gaethje, and even Tony Ferguson who are strong contenders for the BMF title. It’s illogical to make Masvidal defend his BMF title, however, it is feasible to make a BMF title fight in multiple divisions. Even without the BMF title fight, Diaz will have some exciting fights in the lightweight division for sure.

If Diaz decides to wait around for the Masvidal rematch as he allegedly did for the McGregor trilogy then it might not work in the favor of Diaz again. Jorge Masvidal is one of the biggest stars in UFC at the moment and he has some great options ahead of me including the UFC welterweight title. If Covington wins the fight against Usman, then Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal is a much bigger fight than the Diaz vs Masvidal rematch.

Nate Diaz is a prizefighter no matter who he fights now. At the moment, it seems he has more options in the lightweight division than in welterweight.
