The 24-year-old Russian player Daniil Medvedev has upped his game to a great extent in these past few years. He, recently, overtook Roger Federer’s World No. 4 position after winning the 2020 Rolex Paris Masters. But little do people know about the coach and the team that works behind the Russian 24×7.
Daniil received his breakthrough year in 2019 with six consecutive finals appearances and also by winning three Masters events. For his full-time coach Gilles Cervara, it was the Russian’s 2017 Wimbledon win against Stan Wawrinka that started it all.
Frenchman Cervara owns the Elite Tennis Centre in Cannes, and he has been Medvedev’s coach since late 2017. Admittedly, he is the pursuer behind the Russian’s relocation to France, where he would go on to train to become a professional.
A tennis player’s team members are his backbone for him to make a longer tenure in the sport. Their outside the court view helps the player maintain a balance through his varied opponents. Daniil also has such a team in place.
According to Medvedev’s Coach, the team has Eric Hernandez who is a physical trainer, Francisca Dauzet who is a psychologist, and Yann Le Meur who is a sports scientist. Along with them, several others provide the analytical, statistical, and insightful data of the game.
After all, it is the coach who is responsible for the player’s growth and in bringing in results. Cervara and Medvedev share a solid bond, and they seem to be improving with every tournament.
There has been an undoubted development in how Daniil has been performing in big matches. Behind the big leap in rankings, there’s a special connection that helps both of them advance their level.
The coach said, “We have a very good connection, it’s not about talking, it’s sometimes just a look to convey energy and emotion. Things that worry me, don’t worry him and vice versa. I work on my coaching to develop my skills, as Daniil does with his tennis. Both are different approaches to the sport, but we have a good bond and one goal. I want him to realize his potential and have the best career he can.”
As far as one can predict, Daniil and Cervara will keep progressing together. They are the kind that sticks to a goal and keeps working on it even after it’s achieved.
