The Indian women’s cricket team had faced a 1-run defeat against West Indies women in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, in Antigua on November 1. Despte having a good show from the bowlers, batters failed to perform well. However, there were quite a few positives things for India. While Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur failed to anchor the chase, fire with the bat, Kaur made headlines with an one-handed stunner at long-on.
West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor played brilliantly and single-handedly took her side to a competitive total. To reach the century, she smashed Ekta Bisht from big hits. She hit thepenultimat ball for a six and the final ball down the ground and was hoping for a maximum as well. But from nowhere in the scene, Harmanpreet Kaur appeared as she jumped in the air and caught the ball with her left hand to complete a stunning catch.
With ths dismissal, West Indies ended up scoring at 225 for seven in their allotted 50 overs and India failed to reach the finish line as they were bowled out for 224 for seven in 50 overs, losing the match by only one run. Although opener Priya Punia scored a well-made 75 off 107 balls and Jemimah Rodrigues scored 41 and both provided a steady start to India in the chase with a 78-run partnership for the first wicket, veteran players like Punam Raut (22) and Mithali Raj (20) and Harmanprett Kaur failed to contribute much.
At 170 for two in 39.2 overs, India were looking in a comfortable place in their chase down the target, but Anisa Mohammed had some othr plans. The spinner certainly turned the table by taking a five-wicket haul, which included the likes of Priya Punia and India captain Mithali Raj.
India needed nine runs off the final over with two wickets in hand, but Anisa Mohammed dismissed both the batters, including one off the last ball and handed over the hosts a one-run win in the series opener. With this win, they took a lead of 1-0 as well as 2 valuable points in the ICC Women’s Championship as well.
However, the stunner of Harmanpreet Kaur became viral in no time and here is how Twitterati reacted on it:
