Will Bianca Andreescu Reach the Top 5 in the WTA Rankings After the Miami Open 2021?

US Open 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu has finally returned to her old self as she stormed through to the finals of the Miami Open 2021. With her run to the finals, she has again soared up the rankings, but is this enough for her to return to the top five WTA rankings?

Bianca Andreescu started the Miami Open ranked 9th with 4735 points. But her run to the finals earned her 650 points. The Canadian had reached the fourth round of Miami Open 2019, thus earning 120 points. So by earning 530 points, Andreescu reached 5265 points, and as it stands she will finish World No.6 when the rankings are updated next week.

The last time Andreescu was ranked inside the top five was in March 2020. But even by going a full year without tennis, Andreescu found herself in the top 10 again. Now, it looks like she will return to her old self.

How far could Bianca Andreescu go in the rankings after the Miami Open 2021 final?

As things stand, Elina Svitolina is ranked fifth with 5370 points. Svitolina earned 380 points from Miami Open, thus she will have 5750 points. When the rankings are updated on Monday, Svitolina will be 485 points ahead of Andreescu if the Canadian fails to win the Miami Open final.

If Andreescu wins the final, she will cut down the gap between her and Svitolina to 135 points. And 135 points will be easy to cover for Andreescu. When the Miami Open ends, the clay-court season begins, and there are seven WTA tournaments scheduled in the month of April.

Andreescu has zero points to defend in these tournaments. Thus she can add a lot of points and jump past Svitolina to 5th. There are two WTA 500 tournaments, four WTA 250 tournaments, and at the end of April, there is the all-important Mutua Madrid Open. Thus, with decent results, Andreescu could well find herself close to the top four as well.

But right now, standing in her way is World No. 1 Ash Barty at the Miami Open final. Ash Barty is also the defending champion and has had a defining tournament, showing everyone why she is the World No. 1. If Andreescu defeats her, it might be a signal of greater things to come from Andreescu.
