Williams strips to create awareness

The new mother on the WTA circuit, Serena Williams has stripped naked in a nine-second teaser video to create awareness of breast cancer. She sings a line from the 1991 smash hit Divinyls song “I Touch Myself.” She is participating in the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. In the year 2014 the lead singer of Divinyls, Chrissy Amphlett, died from breast cancer and Willians made a bold move to act as a reminder for women to check their breasts. The 23-time Grand Slam champion sang one of the memorable lines from the song: “I love myself, I want you to love me.” The nine-second long teaser was released on Sunday.

Williams has associated herself with the I Touch Myself Project. In 2014, the bra manufacturer Berlei floated the project. Soon after the death of Chrissy Amphlett, the lead singer of Divinyls due to breast cancer. Williams has been a brand ambassador for Berlei since 2006. She used one of the company’s bras during the Australian Open. She appeared in the advertisements for Berlei and also about her pregnancy and motivated people to believe in themselves.

Amphlett wanted the song the song to be a constant reminder for women to be aware of breast cancer. The campaign inculcates the Nike spot in motion where the nine-year-old Serena Williams being encouraged on the court by her father, who told her to play “like you’re at the US Open.”  She is also featured in Nike’s controversial Dream Crazy ad campaign, which was narrated by football star Colin Kaepernick. Despite the melodrama, Nike’s sales skyrocketed after the ad was aired and their profit raised over 30 per cent.

“It’s putting myself in a very vulnerable moment, but just to make a huge statement I think is really important,” Serena said. Serene Williams after going through a rollercoaster of emotions for over a fortnight. She stems from her US Open bitter event and engaged herself to raise cancer awareness. Lisa Wilkinson, who interviewed the greatest sports star alive in New York. She spoke over the release of the commercial which will soon be aired. “When you see that ad in full let me tell you, Serena Williams can sing like an angel,” Lisa said.
