Does this even deserve a mention in this list? Probably not. Probably yes. To be honest, most of the Federer fans were proud of the way their champion fought in arguably the greatest match ever. But amidst the Centre Court’s lights, the cracks in Federer’s hitherto unbreachable castle of greatness, were quite evident. The champion had lost in his backyard, Wimbledon. And that gave many fans a feeling that was hard to shed off, that Roger Federer wasn’t invincible anymore, wasn’t the first ranked player anymore, wasn’t the Wimbledon champion anymore.

Hardly any defeat had left such a long lasting, emotional effect on the hearts of millions. A match cherished for its greatness and gutted over at the same time.

2008 FO – Defeated by Rafa
2008 Wimbledon – Defeated by Rafa
2009 AO – Defeated by Rafa

Probably that was it. The tennis god was so broken by the end of another epic with his nemesis Rafa Nadal, that he couldn’t hold on to his emotions and wept like a child, in front of a packed Melbourne crowd. And with that he broke millions of hearts across the world. Seeing your favorite player breakdown is something every fan would love to forget. The moment however gave us one of the most iconic picture when Rafa consoled the crying Swiss.

A streak of 65 consecutive Grand Slams was broken when Roger missed the Roland Garros. People were broken, but hoped to see him back and fit in Wimbledon. He returned. But only to depart for an even longer duration. His heart wrenching semifinal defeat to Milos Raonic at Centre Court will be the last memory of him in 2016 as Federer has withdrawn from the remaining calendar year in order to rehabilitate his knee. An agonizing moment for not just Federer fans, but everyone who loves the game!

Yes you read that right. One of the most bizarre and agonizing things to witness being a fan is seeing your player booed and that too Roger Federer. This ugly moment came during his semi-final defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic in 2009, Miami Open. The calmest figure of the sport smashed the hell out of one of his frames after netting a forehand during the third set.  “I was just frustrated,” said Federer. “It didn’t feel great. It was just a natural thing I did.”
