Recently, the Coronavirus broke through the US Open ‘bubble’ as it infected Benoit Paire. He was obviously quarantined, but he is not the only one as everyone who had been in contact with him has been isolated.

According to WTA player Kirsten Flipkens, this will have an extremely negative impact and she has just revealed how.

Kirsten Flipkens played the singles’ and doubles’ events where she suffered defeats. If she hadn’t been in close contact with Benoit Paire, she would have gone back home and trained. However, now, she is in quarantine and this will have terrible consequences for her.

She said, “Now it looks like ‘the seven/eleven'(7 players + 4) will have to stay here 2 weeks starting from the last contact with Benoit Paire. So that means the friday the 11th of September! Which means, no qualifying in Rome as it starts Saturday!

“AND, as there is only one WTA event before Roland Garros with only a 28 main draw direct and only 6 in qualifying. Which means, no preparation at all before Roland Garros? “

The US Open Protocols

The policies of the US Open are affecting a lot of players, and Kirsten Flipkens is not the only one complaining. Recently, Kristina Mladenovic also attacked the organizers regarding their protocols. After her second-round match, she said,

It is abominable what they make us experience. I want to regain my freedom, I have a feeling that we are prisoners… I would like to say so many things about what is happening here – it is abominable how we get treated.”

Obviously, the protocols at the US Open are not perfect. But it is great that the event wasn’t canceled altogether like the Wimbledon. We are getting to see some amazing matches and now, we wait to see who will be holding the trophy this year.
