Chris Evert is regarded as one of the best players of all time. The sheer quality of her play has earned her a reputation for drawing large crowds to her matches. Moreover, her competition with Martina Navratilova is widely regarded as one of the most significant milestones in WTA history. Her cool composure throughout every match perplexed her opponents and the crowd cheering.

However, not many know that the 18-time Grand Slam winner had an experience smoking marijuana once in her life. In one of her interviews, Evert opened up about the side effects of smoking marijuana.

Chris Evert on the negative effects of smoking marijuana

In his book, “Hard Courts”, renowned American sports writer, John Feinstein, once revealed that in 1970, tennis great Chris Evert tried marijuana for the first time. From what we can gather from the excerpts of Feinstein’s book, it appears that after experimenting with marijuana a few times, Evert consciously decided to stop doing it.

Later in 1992, she was seen in a candid interview with ‘Sports Illustrated’ talking about her fears and insecurities, her image, etc. During the interview, the host asked her if she regretted having smoked a joint, to which she replied by saying, “The only reason I admitted I had tried it was to say that there is nothing positive about it. If you want to feel good and feel high, then you go for a run; you don’t smoke a joint.”

She continued stating, “In the ’70s that was the thing to try. So I did experiment. It was the worst thing I ever did, because it totally clogged my brain. I couldn’t think.

McEnroe’s recent revelation about his joint smoking

In the most recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, tennis legend John McEnroe was his guest. So during the show, the host, Bill Maher, out of nowhere, lights up a joint and further offers one to McEnroe. The latter accepted it and later admitted that it was his first time smoking.

However, in all fairness, this wasn’t McEnroe’s first time. During this interview with Bill Maher, he reveals that he first smoked when he attended Stanford. And back In 2017, he published a book about his son discovering his marijuana stash.
