Serena Williams’ husband on the problems that plague social media
Recently, Alexis Ohanian shared the type of user needs that social media fulfills. He noticed the problem that each platform faces trying to cater to these needs and discussed a way t to work out a solution.
Firstly, he stated the two important needs of users that social media tries to cater to. Ohanian went on to explain that these needs are like “oil and water”. And platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter can’t mix those two needs. Moreover, he said, when a platform tries to do both, they end up ruining the quality of user experience.
Ohanian tweeted, “Social media can fulfill 2 types of needs: 1. Community (interacting with friends) 2. Entertainment (creator/brand content) TLDR; These needs are like oil and water. No matter how hard FB/IG/Twitter wants to mix them, it’s just not happening.”

Ohanian then used TikTok as an example to prove his point. He said that since it is a platform focused on entertainment, community building is negligible. However, it has built up an immense user base just by focusing on entertainment.
The major crux of his argument came in his next tweet. The business magnate said that platforms like Twitter shouldn’t shift their focus to entertainment since they built their entire legacy on the back of community engagement. Additionally, he also gave a warning stating that if they don’t return to their original motives, another small platform is bound to overtake them in the near future.

By focusing too much on entertainment, legacy social-media companies aren’t adequately satisfying community needs.
They’ve left the gap wide open, and in the next few years, I bet we’ll see a bunch of success from smaller, community-focused platforms.
