The entire tennis community is taken aback by Danielle Collins‘ stellar performances at her home tournament, the Miami Open. After outclassing some of the top guns in the outdoor hardcourt event, the American tennis star is now one win away from glory. If she manages to clinch the WTA 1000 title in Miami, Collins will also hand over to her Romanian colleague Simona Halep an embarrassing record on her return to the tour.

Fans finally get to witness the 2-time singles Grand Slam champion Halep back on the court at the Hard Rock Stadium as she resumed her tennis duties after her doping saga. However, the Romanian player, who entered the Miami Open as a wild card participant, tasted a first-round defeat at the hands of her Spanish opponent, Paula Badosa, who later lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the second round.

Sabalenka then got knocked out of the tournament after her second-round win as she failed to overcome Anhelina Kalinina, who later got defeated by Yulia Putintseva, who then faced a quarterfinal defeat against Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian player later lost to Elena Rybakina, who has now reached the championship game and will lock horns with Danielle Collins. If Collins manages to beat Rybakina in the title match, Halep will end up getting the wooden spoon.

Simona Halep was on the verge of getting the wooden spoon at the US Open

Back in 2022, the Romanian player failed to prevail in her first-round match against Daria Snigur at the Grand Slam event in New York. She got defeated by Snigur, who then lost to Rebecca Marino, who got knocked out by Zhang Shuai, who failed to overcome Coco Gauff in the R16 round.

Gauff then tasted defeat at the hands of Caroline Garcia, who lost in the semis against Ons Jabeur. As the Tunisian player reached the US Open final, Halep was on the verge of getting the wooden spoon. However, her Polish colleague, Iga Świątek, came to her rescue as she won the title match against Jabeur.
