Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand slam champion, is a legend and an icon in the world of tennis. But in the eyes of her father and former coach Rick Macci, she is still the teenager who used to be full of excitement and energy.

Although Williams herself is a mother now, to Macci and Richard, she will always be the enthusiastic child who trained under their aegis. In fact, one of Macci’s prime relishes is talking about her and Venus’ childhood. He often shares stories from their training days. Recently, he pointed out how Williams is still in touch with her former chirpy self.

Rick Macci about Williams’ inner child

Macci often expresses himself with the help of his social media handles. This time he took on Twitter to disclose how the child in Serena is still within her. He wrote, “Serena Williams at the red carpet after party was the same little kid I trained from age 9 to14.9 PLUS 14 IS EXACTLY 23 GRAND SLAMS!”

The 67-year-old American tennis coach has given the sport its five World No.1s including the Williams sisters. He, after learning about the talent the little girls harbored, traveled to Compton to be a part of their journey.

Macci worked alongside Richard Williams to shape arguably one of the best WTA players. Further, apart from Serena and seven times Grand Slam champion, the American has trained Jennifer Capriati, Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick as well.

Serena Williams’ comeback to the circuit

Williams, after keeping out of the circuit, made a comeback in the grass courts of England. The seven time Wimbledon champion, riding high on former records and fans hope, entered the doubles of Eastbourne International. She played alongside the Tunisian tennis star, Ons Jabeur, and executed a decent semifinal run.

However, she failed disappointingly in the grass-court Grand Slam. Williams got out-muscled by Harmony Tan in the first round. With that, she lost her ranking for the first time in 25 years.

Though the 40-year-old remains optimistic about the upcoming tournaments. She is currently testing her skills in the hard courts of the Canadian Open.
