History was made recently at Wembley as Chelsea Women lit up the pitch with a commanding 3-0 win, clinching the domestic treble in a dazzling flourish. Sandy Baltimore struck twice, while Catarina Macario sealed the deal with a 3rd against the Red Devils. But the celebration wasn’t just on the field; Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian just about stole the spotlight from the stands. Before kickoff, the power couple posed proudly with a No. 25 jersey, marking Ohanian’s bold $26.5 million investment for an 8–10% stake in the club. The Reddit co-founder’s presence wasn’t just symbolic, he has now revealed the compelling reason behind his game-changing commitment to the club. And the reason?

A few hours ago, Alexis Ohanian took to his IG to share a powerful video explaining his reasons for investing in Chelsea FC Women. In the video post, the 42-year-old entrepreneur and outspoken women’s sports advocate offered an inside look into the mindset behind his game-changing investment.

Ohanian opened up about the investment, captioning the video: “I built my career spotting 🔥 on the internet—seeing where people are showing up, what they care about, and where that energy is heading next. That’s one of the things that drew me to women’s sports: their social engagement was off the charts but the business world wasn’t catching on. Look at @chelseafcw: 4M fans on IG alone, a stadium crowded with blue jerseys, and a full trophy case 😉 That’s not a one-off. That’s a market waiting to be tapped. This club is Unapologetically Ambitious.” Clearly, this was more than just a sports play; it was a visionary business move.

Serena Williams’ husband went on to reflect on how his journey in women’s sports 1st began with a pioneering move in the US. “Five years ago, I was out, loud and proud, saying women’s sports was dramatically undervalued. That led me to of course become the founding control owner of Angel City FC, and I told folks that was just the start. You know, if you just look at the trophy case of Chelsea FC, it really represents excellence, the top, top tier women’s football, women’s soccer,” he said, emphasizing his admiration for Chelsea’s elite pedigree in world soccer. But that wasn’t all…

He also addressed why he chose to invest in a club located far from home and the financial logic behind the investment as well. “The reason I got so fired up about women’s sports, aside from obviously being married to the GOAT, Serena. The business of it was appealing to me because as a social media guy, I look for heat online, in the free market of attention. If you look at the follower count of the Chelsea Women’s Football Club, that’s 4 million people have signed up to say, ‘I love this team, I love this club, I love these players. Show me more.’ If you’re gonna have one team overseas as an American women’s soccer fan, we hope it’s Chelsea, and we will do work to build it up and let the folks know,” he concluded.

And while the CWFC investor has now shed light on why he chose one of the Premier League’s brightest clubs to invest in, Alexis Ohanian had previously also revealed the true driving force behind his initial bid in Angel City FC.

Alexis Ohanian opens up on why he invested in Angel City FC

Alexis Ohanian has never shied away from crediting the tennis icon Serena Williams as the driving force behind his deep commitment to women’s sports. In a previous interview with CNBC, the entrepreneur explained his vision: “Serena Williams is the prototype for how you can show women’s sports is and can be and should be on the same level as men’s.” Her legacy, both on and off the court, shaped his understanding of the value and potential of women athletes, as he became the founder of Althos.

When it comes to his soccer investments, Alexis has been equally vocal. Back in March 2021, he boldly claimed that the NWSL was a smarter investment than the men’s MLS. “The value of being associated with these women, I think, is a greater brand value than being associated with their male counterparts. And that’s no disrespect to the MLS. I think they’re doing amazing work. But I just think the amount that the women are undervalued is preposterous,” he then added.

Beyond business and branding, there’s also a deeply personal layer to his investment story in the club as well. Ohanian revealed that his daughter, Olympia, played a major role in the pursuit of Angel City FC. “A big part of the reason why I started Angel City FC was because Olympia was running around, this is 2019 in a Alex Morgan jersey,” he said, underscoring how fatherhood reshaped his ambitions in recreating women’s sports.

Now, as the proud investor cements his role as a leading voice in the evolution of women’s sports globally, and especially in soccer, fans eagerly await seeing how Chelsea Women FC fare in their next campaign under this bold and visionary ownership. What are your predictions?
