A few years ago, in 2015, Ronda Rousey shared an awareness post on her Facebook page regarding Apraxia. Apraxia of speech is a neurogenic communication disorder affecting the motor programming system for speech production.

For the first six years of her life, Rousey struggled with speech and could not form an intelligible sentence due to apraxia, a neurological childhood speech sound disorder. This speech disorder was attributed to being born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

Laura Smith is a private clinician in Denver who specializes in childhood apraxia of speech. She shared how Rousey’s parents moved from Riverside, California, to Jamestown, North Dakota, in part to be near the Minot State University speech therapists, who set about bringing her vocal cords to their senses.

According to Smith, Apraxia is not a well-known condition. Smith too, took time to find out her daughter had the similar disorder. After finding out her daughter is suffering with the same, they met the UFC fighter. Rousey said, “Apraxia, yes, this is what they think I had. They wanted to put me in a special classroom away from my friends. They thought I was stupid! But by fourth grade, I was top of my class in algebra, and by high school I tested gifted.” (H/T FORTHEWIN)
