Before every big PPV, WWE selects a ‘theme song’ to accompany it. For example, “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd, “Head Up High” by Fitz, and ‘All The Gold’ by def rebel were the official theme songs for WrestleMania 37.

Hence, it is expected that SummerSlam 2021 will also have a theme song. The theme song is “Up” by none other than Cardi B. WWE has termed the song as “the song of the summer.”

Up was released on February 5, 2021, and quickly reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It previously debuted at number two on the chart, the highest debut for a solo female rap song since Lauryn Hill in 1998.

The song made the Grammy Winner the only female rapper to top Billboard with multiple solo singles, following “Bodak Yellow.”Up is also Cardi’s fifth chart-topper, extending the rapper’s record as the female rapper with the most number-one songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Up was Cardi’s second number one debut on Rolling Stones’ top 100 and made it to the top 10 in multiple charts across the globe. The song also kick-started a trend on TikTok. A dance routine by Sean Bankhead went viral, and various celebrities took part in the #UpChallenge.

The music video was nominated for a BET award and Cardi B performed it live at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Update: WWE has released an official theme for SummerSlam. The song called ‘It’s Summertime, comes from the def rebel. Def rebel is the new music team on WWE after CFO$’s departure in 2019.

Why did WWE choose Up as the official theme for SummerSlam 2021?

By choosing up, or choosing Cardi B, WWE is hopping on the trends of pop culture. Previously WWE mentioned that they want to become more popular and relevant to the Gen Z and millenials demographic. Therefore WrestleMania featured Grammy winner Bad Bunny, and in a match.

Earlier this year, WWE president Nick Khan explained, “No matter when people start watching, they’re always going to obviously get older, so you always have to figure out a new way to get young people in. So what we’re in the middle of—the bad Bunny thing… that’s obviously tailored towards a young audience.”
