Rey Mysterio has been going through some really tough times these days. First, he lost his United States Championship to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel and just last night, Mysterio realized that it was his own team member Santos Escobar who had left the brass knuckles close to Paul which he used against him that fateful night. And if that wasn’t enough, Escobar went on to attack Mysterio tonight on SmackDown.

Mysterio has been on the receiving end of quite a few betrayals in WWE, including from his own son. Here is a list of stars in WWE who turned on the Hall of Famer.

1. Eddie Guerrero

Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio knew each other from their WCW days where they mostly feuded for the Cruiserweight title. That’s also where Guerrero formed the LWO (Latino World Order) and tried to coax Mysterio to join the group. Then after joining the WWE, Guerrero continued to team with Mysterio in tag team action. In 2005, at the PLE No Way Out, Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio beat the Basham Brothers to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. Then at WrestleMania 21, Guerrero challenged Mysterio to a one-on-one match.

Mysterio won that match but it didn’t go down well with Guerrero. The tension finally erupted when they lost the WWE Tag Team Championship a few weeks later. Then on one episode of SmackDown, Guerrero saved Mysterio from an attack by Chavo Guerrero and MNM. But then he assaulted Mysterio and suplexed him onto the steel steps leaving him bruised and bloodied. This was the start of a long feud that became personal and even led to a Ladder Match at SummerSlam 2005 for the custody of his son Dominik Mysterio.

2. Chavo Guerrero

Rey Mysterio made his WWE debut in July 2002 by defeating Chavo Guerrero. Post that he feuded with Chavo Guerrero for the Cruiserweight title. But as time went by, the two got along well and Guerrero even assisted Mysterio in one of the title defenses against Mark Henry, thus helping him retain the title.

But on one occasion, when Mysterio was involved in a World title match against Booker T in 2006 at The Great American Bash, Chavo Guerrero entered the ring with a steel chair and fans were hoping that he would knock down Booker T. But Guerrero hit Mysterio with the steel chair right to the head. Thus Mysterio lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Booker T. This resulted in a heated feud between the two which eventually led to a Falls Count Anywhere match at the PLE No Mercy in October which Rey Mysterio convincingly won.

3. Batista

This was one of the most shocking betrayals in the WWE. Rey Mysterio and Batista got close post Eddie Guerrero’s death in 2005. Mysterio teamed up with Batista to defeat MNM on an episode of SmackDown to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. They both dedicated their title win to the late Eddie Guerrero. A couple of weeks later, they lost their titles to MNM after interference from Mark Henry.

Then later in 2009, the duo teamed up again for Tag Team Championship glory but lost to Chris Jericho and Big Show in a match for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship at Hell in a Cell. Post that at the PLE Bragging Rights, Mysterio and Batista participated in a Fatal 4 Way match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Mysterio tried his best to win the championship and in the process also prevented Batista from winning the title. An infuriated Batista clotheslined a defenseless Mysterio after saying, “I’m going to rip your head off”. He then went on to viciously attack Mysterio outside the ring while Mysterio continued to plead for his mercy. This finally led to a match at Survivor Series which Batista won.

4. Dominik Mysterio

The entire WWE universe is well aware of how badly Dominik Mysterio treated his father. It all started in 2020 with ‘Dirty’ Dom teaming up with his father to face Seth Rollins and Murphy at Payback. They even went on to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Thus making them the first father-and-son tag team champions in WWE history.

They lost the titles to The Usos after just 63 days at Money in the Bank. With The Judgment Day getting into a feud with Mysterios, they tried to recruit ‘Dirty’ Dom to their team. This then led to a tag team match where Edge and Rey Mysterio faced Bálor and Priest at Clash at the Castle in September 2022.

That’s the night ‘Dirty’ Dom betrayed his father by giving him a clothesline, thus pledging his allegiance to The Judgement Day to whom he has been loyal ever since.

5. Santos Escobar

And the last on this list is the recent betrayal that Rey Mysterio faced last night on SmackDown. This all started when Mysterio replaced an injured Santos Escobar to win the United States Championship by beating Austin Theory. Deep down, Escobar always thought that it was his rightful opportunity to face Theory for the title. Hence he later challenged Mysterio for a title match which Mysterio won.

But even after that, Escobar continued to hold a grudge against Mysterio and that exploded on SmackDown last night. Carlito came out at the start of the show and pointed out that Escobar was the one who kept the brass knuckles close to Logan Paul at the end of the match. Escobar then left the ring in frustration. After Carlito’s match with Bobby Lashley, The Street Profits attacked him while Escobar just stood by like a spectator.

That’s when Mysterio came to the aid of Carlito with a steel chair. Mysterio then questioned Escobar why he was not doing anything to help their fellow member. But Escobar shockingly turned on him and brutally attacked The Master Of The 619.

After the attack Escobar even had the audacity to say, “This one’s on you“. We will only have to wait and watch to see how this story eventually unfolds.

One take at a time

I still vividly remember the time when WWE VHS's used to be played on cable movie channels every Sunday(early 90s in India). And that's where my love for the WWE began. My love and passion for pro wrestling only grew over the years in the form of a mini collection of cards, stickers, tees, action figures and even a WWE Championship belt signed by the 'Big Red Machine' Kane himself (talk about getting lucky).
