With the return of live events, WWE wants to bring back some huge names to draw crowds of significant numbers. One of those names is the sixteen-time World Champion John Cena. Speculation points towards a huge match at SummerSlam between Cena and WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.

Is John Cena vs Roman Reigns a bad idea?

Fans have eaten up the rumors of John Cena returning, but there isn’t much truth to it. However, Cena’s father has an opinion on WWE potentially pitting his son against the Tribal Chief. While fans would love to see this match take place, Cena Sr. thinks it would end in disaster.

Speaking on Boston Wrestling MWF, Cena Sr. talked about the potential John Cena vs Roman Reigns match at SummerSlam. He also weighed upon the ‘passing of the torch’ between Cena and Roman.

“I just don’t think that’s gonna happen. What good is putting Cena up against Reigns? First of all, you gotta hear me out: there is no passing of the torch. That’s a lot of bulls***. I’m sorry to say it is.”

“It used to be a passing of the torch. Now it’s a lot of bulls***. My whole thing is, if you put Cena with Reigns, let’s say Cena does the job [lose] and justly so… Reigns, is it gonna make him any better or any worse? No, because there’s gonna be boo and boo. Who do you really want to win?”

Potential match card for SummerSlam 2021

Reports claimed WWE is planning to make SummerSlam equivalent to WrestleMania in 2021. With crowd capacity reduced by seventy-five percent for WrestleMania, WWE couldn’t really capitalize on their annual cash cow. Fortunately, SummerSlam presents the opportunity for redemption.

Apart from Cena vs Reigns, another dream match discussed is WWE Champion Bobby Lashley defending his title against a returning Brock Lesnar. Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman claimed Brock could return for the upcoming live events, and with Lashley calling him out frequently, it could be a real possibility.

Becky Lynch has looked phenomenal having given birth in December 2020. The Man will want to return to the ring soon, and SummerSlam presents the perfect opportunity. A match with either Bianca Belair or Rhea Ripley would be a cracker. Add to his a potential Edge vs Seth Rollins match, and you have a WrestleMania size match card for WWE’s summer extravaganza.
