Dustin Rhodes started his career with WCW from 1988-1989. However, it was not until 1995 that he introduced the world to the character we know today as Goldust. The nickname of the character was The Bizzare One, as it was an amalgamation of multiple tropes to create it. It was spooky mysterious, with a hint of sexual tension.

As Goldust, Rhodes had one of the most unique characters on the roster. Many wrestling fans today consider Goldust’s gimmick to have been ahead of its time. This character did leave a lasting impact on the WWE.

Despite the lukewarm welcome to the gimmick at the start, it gained popularity later in Goldust’s career. Fans began to love the gimmick as the PG era began, and the sexual tension was reduced. Although Rhodes experimented with other gimmicks, none were as successful as Goldust.

Dustin Rhodes hated the gimmick at the start

Rhodes has gone on record and said that he did not know much about the character at the start. It was the brainchild of Vince McMahon. While working under his father’s shadow, Rhodes needed a gimmick to call his own. When McMahon offered him the gimmick, he did not fully understand it and agreed to do it.

Rhodes also claimed that during the first few months of the gimmick, he was uncomfortable. He wore a single gold jumpsuit with makeup and glitter. However, despite his discomfort, he owned the character and moved forward.
