

Wrestling fans often talk about the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin during the Attitude Era. However, there was another top star in making at the time named Dwayne Johnson, who debuted as Rocky Maivia.
When the product changed quickly after The Rock’s debut, the fans showed their disinterest in Johnson’s babyface gimmick. There were ‘Die Rocky Die’ chants in the arena. This all changed when Johnson turned heel and completely changed his on-screen persona.

Recently on the latest WWE Rival–Steve Austin Vs The Rock episode, WWE official Bruce Prichard shares his views on Dwayne Johnson’s rise. He claims to be surprised how Johnson pulled the heel plug and ran with it, even though his nature is different in real life.
Prichard said, “Rocky took in and ran with it. People viewed him as this co*ky arrogant person. As a human being, he wasn’t, but he would walk into a room and own it.”
He added, “It’s interesting when you look at the two characters because they were both rebellious and they were both tight. When they both come together, alright…this is beautiful music”.
Elsewhere in the episode, Bruce Prichard also stated the WWE creative team was confused about planning something for Rocky Maivia. The babyface run did not go as the company planned it would go.
However, after some time, they came up with a plan of turning The Rock heel. The Great One joined The Nation of Domination and quickly adopted a heel version of his character. This turn definitely proved to be one of the best as he got over the fans who, at the point, loved edgier content more.
Dwayne Johnson calls his WWE character a real-life version of himself
In the recent WWE Rivals episode, we got detailed information on the character development of Dwayne Johnson. The transition from Rocky Maivia to The Rock was indeed notable after DJ turned heel. However, Johnson calls his The Rock character a real-life version of himself.

In a pre-recorded interview with Johnson in the episode, he explains it. He said, “I was able to be authentic. You are not a character. It’s exactly who you are just with the volume turned way up.”

At the start of the episode, even Stone Cold Steve Austin, has admitted that Johnson was given the wrong gimmick. He believed in Johnson had much more charisma which wasn’t able to portray being Rocky Maivia in the initial part of his WWE run.
