Jonathan Coachman had a memorable run in the WWE in the first decade of the new millennium. The Coach was involved in several segments with The Rock, entertaining the WWE Universe with their interaction. Despite putting on a show for several years, WWE legend Jim Ross said the 49-year-old did not belong there in those backstage segments. He also revealed how Vince McMahon played a part behind the scenes.
Vince McMahon liked being intimidating, says Jim Ross
Ross, regarded as one of the greatest wrestling commentators of all time, recently revealed how Vinnie Mac loved to throw his power around. “He was intimidating. So that’s how Vince liked it. He liked the edge and all that stuff,” Ross, 71, said.

The WWE Hall of Famer said Vince would constantly shout at Coachman while trying to elevate the latter’s game. However, Ross revealed on his Grilling JR podcast that McMahon was living in denial. “He was trying to bring Coach to a different level without admitting that maybe Coach at that point in time in his career, just wasn’t meant for this role,” he said.
JR said McMahon thrived on controversy and believed putting pressure on people would make them better at their jobs. While Ross admitted facing a similar situation, he said it made him angry as Vince McMahon would shout instructions on the headset.
The 71-year-old, however, said the pressure tactics would work at times. “…it ticks you off, you get motivated and all of a sudden, boom. You’re at a different level, which is what he wanted. Right? Sometimes it just took a little bit of additional motivation to make that happen.”
Coachman left the WWE in 2008, though he made a return to the company in 2016 for a shorter stint than his previous stay.
In 2021, The Coach opened up about his experiences of working with McMahon, where he made a shocking claim about the billionaire.
Jonathan Coachman would never work for Vince McMahon again
The former WWE employee said he was owed money for his services. Coachman made the claims on his ‘Ask Coach Anything’ Patreon show on September 9, 2021. He added that the bitter experience would prevent him from working with McMahon in the future.

He said the expenses were incurred during his travel to help McMahon in his XFL league. According to him, the owed amount is between “$8,000-$20,000”. The former employee said he failed to get the money from WWE as the promotion said the minor football league was a different company.
Ironically, Dwayne Johnson and his ex-wife Dany Garcia bought the XFL from McMahon. Johnson and Garcia recently celebrated the successful completion of the first season after its relaunch.
