No one can own the ring with just his words like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can. The People’s Champion has historically been the king of wisecracks and comebacks, and his recent story about a promo with Triple H proves it beyond doubt.

While on Instagram Live, the Rock and Brian Gewirtz shared the story behind one of his iconic RAW promos to Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins. At the time, Triple H had turned heel, and it was up to babyface Johnson to put The Game back in place.

Chuckling, Johnson said, “You know, when Triple H talks, it sounds like really long winded and he’s like, “Then uhh… gonna do this uhhh… my name is the game uhhh.” And I was like, what if I really went in on him, talk some really mad s**t about it, and just how like he bores the s**t out of people. So, we come up with this promo on the back end.”

Dwayne Johnson made Gewirtz insult Triple H

After coming up with the promo, Gewirtz and Johnson pitched it to Vince McMahon. The funny part of the story was that Stephanie McMahon and all of D-Generation X was in the room while they were pitching the promo idea. As the Rock said, “I can see already Triple H is like… we were buddies, but it was also very competitive.”

The never-before-heard story just gets better and better. Apparently, the Rock asked Gewirtz to imitate Triple H, saying that he was doing the impression backstage, and it was perfect. “You (Johnson) built it up so well, because you did everything, but the voice,” said the iconic WWE writer, “Hunter’s ears have steam emerging from them. And DX wasn’t exactly like frolicking with laughter either. So yeah, so I did it. I was like, “In this ring uhhh I’m the Game uhhh, and I’m gonna say absolutely nothing uhhh.” It surely amused fans that Johnson outed his close friend in front of the owner of the WWE and the one and only The Game.

The Rock is the king of promos

It is no secret among wrestling fans that The Rock’s popularity comes from his skills on the mic more than sheer wrestling talent. Johnson, with his over-the-top, brash persona, has won every heart there is – except for the ones in his punchline. Ever since he began his career in wrestling, Johnson has been at the top of his game when it comes to talking smack.
