Throughout his inspiring career, Undertaker is known as a backstage leader and a loyal company man. He has an immense fan following and is a respected name in the wrestling business. Another example of his loyalty to Vince McMahon was evident in 1998. At Rock Bottom: In Your House, The Undertaker faced the Stone Cold in a Buried Alive match, and Austin emerged victorious. The timing of the match was unconventional, as both stars were not able to involve themselves completely. The match did not go as planned as both the wrestlers were suffering health issues.

In a podcast, Bruce Prichard, WWE’s long-time executive highlighted the Buried Alive match and recalled both the wrestlers were not in the condition to wrestle and still performed at the event.

Bruce Prichard recalls the Buried Alive bout

Prichard recalled the 1998 match on his Something to Wrestle With Podcast in 2018. He said The Undertaker was suffering from a broken ankle at the time and Steve Austin had barely eaten anything for the past week as he battled an intestinal virus. Despite these setbacks, the match took place, but it was considered a letdown.

Explaining his point in his, he said, “Yeah. You watch it if you didn’t know that Steve was sick and get no Taker was hurt. You’d say Hey, this is this pretty good match they fought all over the place they used all the all the tricks to masquerade all of that. So you didn’t really notice Taker limping. You didn’t notice Steve just being a step off and not really there.”

Prichard expressing frustration continued, “It was painful to watch that night live. It was even more painful to watch 20 years later because Steve is livid. You can tell and I’m screaming 20 years later, I’m screaming at the TV probably the way I was screaming at gorilla position.”

The clash between the legends could’ve been a memorable match, but WWE fans remember the Buried Alive match for different reasons.

Prichard says till date he feels it was painful to watch. Both the wrestlers gave their 100% to put up a great show, but somehow it went down as a failed attempt.

They had to battle their health problems which almost took a toll on their health and could have led to further damage.

The rivalry between Steve Austin and The Undertaker

The rivalry between Steve Austin and The Undertaker is one of the most underrated rivalries in WWE history. Vince McMahon is Austin’s biggest rival and Undertaker’s top opponent was Kane or Mick Foley. Undertaker and Austin faced each other on various occasions, but are not the top opponents. Still, they had quite a few interesting moments with each other in WWE.

The Undertaker and Stone Cold had various matches where they played different dynamics in every match.

Austin has never hesitated to praise Undertaker. Even though they were rivals, Steve’s admiration for Undertaker is ever-growing. During the Buried Alive match, both of the WWE stars showed immense courage and dedication towards the sport for which their fans and fellow WWE members have massive respect in their hearts.
