Dwayne Johnson continues to be one of the biggest names in the pro-wrestling industry ever since his WWE debut in 1996. When not showing off his athletic abilities at the squared circle, The Great One wowed the WWE Universe with his mic skills. Several of his catchphrases have attained iconic status. Be it ‘It doesn’t matter’ or ‘If you smell what The Rock is cooking’, these iconic lines have transcended the barriers of pro wrestling and have become a part of pop culture. However, not everyone was pleased with The Brahma Bull’s gift of the gab (or the lack of it). A former WWE personality has revealed how one of Johnson’s bizarre ideas prevented him from doing his ‘job’.
Kevin Kelly explains the mechanism behind his WWE interviews with Dwayne Johnson
Kevin Kelly worked as a backstage interviewer, a commentator, and later as a talent scout during his time with the Stamford-based company between 1996 and 2003. He made his debut the same year as The Rock. Kelly is one of those people who worked closely with the People’s Champion.

Johnson would make fun of Kelly during the interviews. One of the other mainstays from their popular segment was The Rock raising his hand and cutting Kelly midway through.

Reminiscing their interviews, Kelly told the Insiders Edge podcast that he was crestfallen every time The Great One raised his hand. “So, I get to ask the question, and when he would put up the hand and stop me, it was a soul crusher. The zing, I would be unaware of it because I was so crestfallen that I didn’t get to ask my question,” Kelly said.
However, the 55-year-old said they prepared for it in advance, working together on producing the scenes. Though Kelly stated that some of them were spontaneous by the Hollywood superstar.
By the time Kelly was released by the WWE as part of budget cuts, Johnson was trying to find his feet in Hollywood. Kelly has since had stints in Major League Wrestling, Ring of Honor, and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Meanwhile, after Dwayne Johnson canceled his WrestleMania 39 appearance, reports of his future in the WWE have emerged.
Will Dwayne Johnson appear at WrestleMania 40?
Before WrestleMania 39, there were reports of Dwayne Johnson facing his cousin Roman Reigns in the main event at SoFi Stadium on April 2. That did not happen as The Rock turned down the offer, citing a lack of match fitness. That led to The Tribal Chief going toe-to-toe with the American Nightmare Cody Rhodes.

Now, American journalist Dave Meltzer has said recently that The Rock left a “crack in the door open” about his possible return to WrestleMania 40 at Philadelphia in 2024. Meltzer, however, has stated that it was “far from a commitment and certainly nothing anyone should count on happening”.
