Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest stars in the world right now. But it will amaze you to know where The People’s Champ started. While being from a well-renowned professional wrestling family, The Rock started his journey by trying his luck in the Canadian Football League. But one injury later, he switched his career and never looked back.

But that doesn’t mean that he didn’t struggle with the new change. Despite pro wrestling being in his blood as he was the first third-generation wrestler in WWE, his first gimmick failed to connect with the audience. But eventually, The Rock found his groove, and till day fans remember him for the excellent feuds with Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan, and John Cena. And not to mention his extensive movie catalog.
JR talks about the attractiveness that Dwayne Johnson drew before joining WWE
In an interview with Colin Cowherd, Jim Ross reminisced on his early days in WWE and recruiting Dwayne Johnson for WWE. He says, “We knew he had the DNA, but he wanted to be a football player. He got cut from the Calgary Stampeders. Didn’t have any money. I go to Florida, I meet with him, I watch him workout and I take him to lunch.”

“Every female in the joint came by to fill our water glasses and some of them didn’t even work there. They see this 6’5 stud and he looks like he is cut out of granite and this wonderful ethnicity. He said, I’d loved to buy you lunch JR, but I only got seven dollars and so his production company now is called Seven Bucks Entertainment after that. He told me on that day, I am going to be your top guy.”
How WWE failed to capitalize on The Rock’s charisma in the ’90s
While the story above may signify the charisma and looks that The Rock had even before joining WWE or acting in Hollywood, during his first few years, WWE failed to do anything with it. Introducing the public to Rocky Maivia, a handsome man with a noodles haircut and confetti on his arms didn’t work.

But his ability in the ring justified his initial push, and he soon became the Intercontinental Champion. When the fans started to boo him, WWE mixed him in with the Nation of Domination. After that, he took over as the leader, and then when he joined the authority and never looked back.
