John Cena has struck again on Instagram. This time, the 46-year-old has left a clue about his retirement, a topic that recently surfaced. Having served the WWE for 21 years, Cena has now lightened his load in the promotion. While he hasn’t been as elusive as fellow icon Dwayne Johnson, John Cena doesn’t fight 200 matches a year anymore. And with every match and appearance in the WWE, a section of the fans keeps an eye on the proverbial clock before it stops ticking, as Cena calls an end to his career.

And like always, it is a guessing game with Cena’s posts on Instagram. Unlike most people on the social media site, he prefers to have his followers, almost 20 million strong, use their imagination.

Is John Cena ready to have a retirement match against an old friend?

Don’t bother looking at the method behind John Cena’s madness on Instagram. There’s a fair chance that you’ll end up with nothing in most cases. His posts are motley in nature. They could be ranging from funny to plain bizarre. But for once, his post makes sense, to the plain mind at least.

Cena posted a zoomed-up picture of an internet activity of Matt Cardona, erstwhile Zack Ryder in the WWE. The former superstar recently nominated himself as Cena’s opponent in his final match. The question was posted by WrestleFeatures on Twitter.

Uploading the screen grab of Cardona’s answer, the 16-time world champion used it as the object of his latest post. While this too doesn’t contain a caption, the timing of it is very interesting.

Has John Cena tacitly agreed to a match with Cardona? The two aren’t strangers. In fact, Cena and the 38-year-old have a shared history in the Stamford-based promotion.

Meanwhile, the post received a reply from Cardona, who looked to reopen their 2012 chapter.

Is Matt Cardona still looking for answers?

If you have been watching WWE for over a decade, you would know about the time John Cena cheated on his ‘broski’ Ryder. In a backstage segment, Cena shared an intimate moment with Eve Torres, the then storyline romantic interest of Ryder. What made it even more tragic was a wheelchair-ridden Ryder witnessing it from a few yards away. Oh, and the date? It was February 14th, 2012.

Reacting to Cena’s Instagram post, Ryder wrote, “Rise Above Hate”. This is an indication of their shared past. During that time, Kane tried his best to make Cena turn heel. To battle the sentiment, the Leader of Cenation wore T-shirts with the said catchphrase.

Cena was, coincidentally, wearing a similar T-shirt when the backstage segment took place. It seems a crestfallen Ryder is yet to let go of the betrayal. Again, nothing has been made official. And the foremost requirement for that is Cardona/Ryder to get back to the WWE, as Cena is likely to have his last match there.

There were reports of the company showing their interest in rehiring the wrestler, but that hasn’t taken place yet. This theory will gather more pace if the WWE manages to acquire Cardona’s services.
