Gillberg and James Ellsworth had a notable run together
Duane Gill has known James Ellsworth since the time he was born. The bond was strong enough for Gill to choose Ellsworth as his opponent for his retirement match.
Gillberg and James Ellsworth wrestled for Adrenaline Wrestling on February 28th marking the former’s retirement match. However, before this match, Gillberg and Ellsworth had formed a Tag Team to win the Adrenaline Championship Wrestling Tag Team Championship.

During an interview, Ellsworth revealed the conversation that led to the duo stepping inside the ring as opponents.
“Well, a couple of months ago, he said to me, ‘Yeah, I’m getting older. Wrestling on the indies is fun and everything. but as you get older your body breaks down. I’m going to have my last match soon.’ I said, ‘Alright.’ So we set up a show for him in Baltimore, Maryland. I said, ‘Alright Duane, we have a show set up for you with Adrenaline Championship Wrestling, and you can wrestle whoever you want.’ He said, ‘Well, I’m definitely wrestling you.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’”

WWE rebranded Gill as Goldberg’s parody version, Gillberg, following his popularity at WCW. After the rebrand, Gillberg had a successful run as a Superstar, which included winning the light heavyweight championship after defeating Christian.
Duane Gill left the company in 2000, but has made sporadic appearances ever since. The last time he appeared in the WWE ring was during the Kevin Owens show on February 13th, 2017 where he brought back the famous Gillberg character.
