Heels are famous in wrestling for being the most significant part of any storyline. While babyfaces are portrayed as on-screen superheroes, heels have to play the villain without tripping the line between kayfabe and reality. While there may be a lot of heels in wrestling today, across different promotions, few have amassed as much hate as Dominik Mysterio.
Being part of The Judgement Day, Mysterio is not only one of the most hated superstars in WWE right now, but arguably the entire wrestling industry. After his match at WrestleMania with his father, Rey Mysterio, the young star was booed to the extent that he could not speak while standing in the middle of the ring. His work as a heel is commendable but a recent comparison with AEW’s MJF didn’t sit well with the fans.

Twitter compares the heel persona of MJF and Dominik Mysterio
NoDQ.com asked their audience on Twitter if they think Mysterio has surpassed MJF as a heel character. This was after the outpouring of hate that Mysterio received on the past Monday Night Raw. While there is no one in WWE who gets as much hate, AEW is an entirely different beast.
Considering the crowd reactions for Dominik Mysterio, do you think he has surpassed MJF as a heel character? #WWE #AEW pic.twitter.com/uLTPN4vfwC
— NoDQ.com: WWE and AEW news (@nodqdotcom) April 14, 2023
MJF has been the de-facto image of a heel character in AEW since the birth of the promotion. He has feuded with every babyface in the company and his actions make the crowd boo him no matter what.
From his mic segments to cheating in his matches, MJF took the heel character to another sphere. More than that, the one thing that stands out about him is that he never leaves his heel character, even backstage or at meets and greets, as well as on social media.

Whereas, Mysterio has a total of two to three years of experience in the ring. He debuted at SummerSlam 2020 against Seth Rollins without any background experience in wrestling.
He has matured over the years and his work with The Judgement Day has turned him into a solid heel, but he may have more work to do before he gets to the level of Friedman.
Fans display anger over this blatant comparison
This comparison didn’t go unnoticed by the wrestling Twitter community. Through this tweet, many fans displayed their disagreement with the comparison while some called it unfair. Here are some of them of their reactions.
This fan is clearly pointing out all the areas that Mysterio might improve in the future.
People hate MJF because he's a good heel and wrestler.
People hate Dom because he's untalented, is put on a pedestal, and is handed opportunities other wrestlers deserve much more so WWE can cash in on cheap nostalgia. Dom is 🗑and wouldnt even cut it in the indies. All his dad

Hell no. Character wise anyway. Yeah, he gets way more boos than any other heel in the industry but his character work really needs some tuning. His dad and the Judgment day are carrying him hard. We need see him stand on his own two before we can say for sure.

He needs to do a lot more winning first before we even put him in same room with MJF
— D’Mari Harding, M.A. (@DmariHard) April 14, 2023
This fan thinks that fans hate Mysterio, not for his character but for the position the management places him in.
No, I feel like the difference is that people genuinely hate Dominik's persona and with MJF they understand that he's a character.
— TotalGrogu (@TMilge) April 14, 2023
If both becomes free agent tomorrow, MJF would be wanted by any company. Dominik wouldn't be considered without his dad as a package.
— OldPoem (@OldPoem) April 15, 2023
Mysterio is fairly new, while MJF has already achieved world champion status.
Not a fair comparison whatsoever. Dominick is still new in his career and finally coming into his own as a competitor. MJF has wrestled for many more years and honed his character to what it is now.
— FoxyWoxy (@GradyFox1987) April 14, 2023
No he can barely cut a promo. He’s progressing nicely but he can’t touch MJF.

It will be exciting to see if Mysterio can get the audience to hate him after his father has retired from wrestling.

Show me his reaction when he isn't in a main event quality feud with his ready made opponent, who is literally both his father and the most over luchador in the US in modern times. If he can keep that reaction while feuding with, for example, Street Profits, we can reevaluate.

Without a doubt, one can agree that Mysterio needs a lot of time to reach the level of a world champion, but it is fascinating to see the hate he is able to garner in such a short time.
