Hulk Hogan Paid a Heavy Price When He Did the Unthinkable to Please Japanese Fans

The two-times WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan once disgraced the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Hulk Hogan is known across the globe for his time with Vince McMahon’s company. However, ‘The Hulkster’ has also played an essential part in a Japanese wrestling promotion.

In the 1990s, during a post-match interview, just to please the Japanese fans, Hogan spoke without even thinking twice. Hogan, during the conversation, smacked the WWE, a wrestling promotion that created him in the first place.

Vince McMahon believed in Hulk Hogan, and it was evident because he took him under his wings even though AWA owner Verne Gagne did not believe in him. But instead, a few years after his WWE debut, Hogan betrayed Mr. McMahon and the company by choosing NJPW over WWE.

At WrestleMania IX, Hogan had just won the WWF Championship from Yokozuna. The two-time World Champion Yokozuna lost the title to Hogan because of a slight mishap by his manager, Mr. Fuji. The Hulkster’s victory over Yokozuna marked him as a five-time WWF Champion.

Later, Hulkamania went on a Japan tour to be a part of New Japan Pro Wrestling. The wrestling fans witnessed a championship dream match. The IGWP Heavyweight Champion The Great Muta and The WWF Champion Hulk Hogan locked horns at Wrestling Dontaku 1993.

Hogan captured his presence in NJPW as he emerged victorious over The Great Muta with an Axe Bomber. In a post-match press conference in Japan, Hulk Hogan insulted the WWE Championship.

Hogan said, “Five-times World Wrestling Federation Champion – this belt is just a toy. It’s just a trinket on a Christmas tree, like an ornament. The belt that I want is one that The Great Muta has, the IWGP belt. Because when Hulk Hogan wins IWGP Championship, which he should have right now, it will prove New Japan Pro Wrestling and Hulk Hogan is the greatest partners in the world.”

Hogan did not think about the consequences and slammed the WWF title by calling it a toy. In addition, the WWE Hall of Famer continued to praise NJPW over WWF.

However, being a five times WWF Champion, The Hulkster did not realize that Mr. McMahon and WWE were giving it all to him. 

How did Vince McMahon and company react to The Hulkster’s remarks?

The Hulkster did not promote WWF and the Championship belt; he instead continued to demean the title. Hogan considered the IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt the genuine championship belt over the WWF. Hulk Hogan said these words to impress the Japanese wrestling fans.

The statement mentioned above by The Hulkster felt like a betrayal to Vince McMahon and the company. The Hulkster calling the WWF Championship a toy was not received well by Mr. McMahon, as Hogan paid the price when he returned to the United States. When Hogan returned to America from his Japan tour, he lost the WWF title back to Yokozuna within a month.

Later, due to The Hulkster losing the title, he became furious at the company, which created controversy between Hulk Hogan and the WWE. Ultimately, The Hulkster and his partner in crime, Jimmy Hart, decided that they would not continue their journey with WWE anymore.

Eventually, it led to Hogan’s and WWE’s tenure coming to an end, which resulted in Hulk Hogan jumping ship to WCW after a few months.
