The Undertaker is an iconic figure in professional wrestling and helped build the authenticity of the sport in the world. The character amounts to so much legacy and history that it is baffling to think of a time where The Undertaker would never be born. And according to him that just might have been the case, if not for Vince McMahon.

The fact that The Undertaker’s absence from the most critical years of pro wrestling is unthinkable goes to show the impact that the man has left on the business. Also, it shows the brilliance that Vince McMahon had in his prime with the creative side of pro wrestling.

The Undertaker talks about being scared of debuting as ‘Egg Man’

In the recent episode of WWE Legends Biography, The Undertaker talks about his debut plans in WWE. He said, “I’m aware of the fact that they’re discussing and they’re trying to get me booked. But they still haven’t figured out what they were going to do. So they start this promotion where they’ve got this gigantic egg on the set.”

“And as soon as I saw it, I was like, Oh no, they’re gonna make me an egg man. They’re gonna shave my eyebrows off and they’re gonna make me like Mr. Clean. I’m gonna be a giant egg. I had worked myself up so much that I just knew the phone was gonna ring and, Hey egg man.”

“And sure enough, the phone rings one day and I’m like, Hello, Is this the Undertaker? It was Vince who called me, so that alone was really cool to me. That this was his character that he had come up with. I was stoked, I didn’t sleep that night.

The legacy that the Deadman left behind

While many gimmicks saw the light of day, most did not connect with the audience and none connected quite like The Undertaker. It was something about his charisma, his aura, and his commitment to the work that kept Mark Calaway keep coming back for more than 30 years. But every great thing must come to an end. And so did The Undertaker.

After countless retirement matches, with Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, and Goldberg, Mark Calaway has finally taken off the robe, the hat, and the gloves. But the wrestling world will always need a character akin to The Undertaker around, striking fear into their opponents and the audience.

Few have tried it and fewer have succeeded to a limit. Prime among them is The Fiend, a creation of former WWE Champion, Bray Wyatt, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to make a return anytime soon.
