WWE stunned the pro wrestling world on April 15 last year with a string of releases. The company followed it up with another string of releases on the same day, April 15, a year later. They released several top Superstars including Samoa Joe, Mickie James, and Billie Kay-Peyton Royce – The IIconics.

The IIconics talk about their shocking WWE release

Cassie Lee and Jessica McKay fka The IIconics recently joined Bully Ray and David LaGreca on the Busted Open Radio. During the appearance, Ray asked The IIconics what really happened that led to their release. Jessica (Billie Kay) instantly said, “I wish I knew, to be honest.”

Explaining her release and how it came to be, she said, “I was in total shock.” She revealed she initially thought the call would be about something WWE wants her to do, but it wasn’t. It was the call to let her know she had been released.

McKay says, “When I heard those words, ‘we’re going to release you,’ my heart dropped. I was so shocked, and I was just heartbroken. I don’t have any answers. And I don’t think I’m ever going gonna get answers. So at the moment, I’m just trying to have peace with it.”

After Billie, Peyton Royce revealed she went in total shock on hearing of her release. She says she knew WWE does budget cuts every year, but they hadn’t done one in recent memory.

Cassie Lee fka Peyton Royce also shared that she thought the string of releases last year was just due to the pandemic. In all honestly, she did not see the release coming.

Cassie Lee revealed she was getting a massage at her home when Matt Cardona told her to check the phone. She checked her phone and then slowly realized what went down. In fact, Cassie says she and Jessica are still going through waves with it.

“One day, I’ll feel so free and so excited for these opportunities that now we can take upon ourselves. I just don’t understand, and I don’t think we will ever understand them. To be honest with you, I don’t think there’s much of a reason other than cuts had to be made,” concluded one-half of the former IIconics.

The IIconics were one of the most entertaining women’s tag teams in WWE history. The company will circumnavigate the earth but will never be able to find two characters like Billie Kay and Peyton Royce.

WWE has missed out on gold, but we’re sure it will be someone else’s gain. After all, both women are too good to be off our TV screens.
