Apart from being an exceptional wrestling talent, Ric Flair also has a great wrestling mind. He had a long career filled with several iconic moments. Although Flair retired several years ago, he made his comeback to the ring for a final match last year against Jeff Jarrett, and Jay Lethal, while he teamed up with his son-in-law Andrade El Idolo. Recently during his podcast alongside Stone Cold Steve Austin, he opened up about current-generation wrestlers not understanding the basics of wrestling attire.
He claimed that except for The Undertaker back during their days, everybody used to wrestle in wrestling trunks, yet sold multiple merchandise. He further claimed how he was against the current generation of wrestlers wearing their own merchandise to the ring.

What more did Ric Flair say against wrestlers wearing their own merchandise?
The Nature Boy expressed his disapproval of wrestlers wearing their merchandise to the ring. He further claimed how Austin never wore his “3:16 shirt to the ring” yet sold more merchandise than anyone. Flair further told that he understood how times have changed, but despite that, he is still not in support of it.

It might come as old-school thinking, but Flair did not shy away from his point. He took names and claimed how all of them wrestled just wearing trunks including Austin, The Rock, and Randy Orton. Flair himself wore trunks in the ring and a robe during his entrance.

Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestled in trunks but wore a vest to the ring. None of the above names wore their own merchandise during their entrances. Whereas the current set of wrestlers do. Flair said, “nobody sold more merchandise than you but you didn’t wear your 3:16 shirt to the ring. But everybody wears their damn merchandise now. I mean there’s no creation in an outfit.”

The 74-year-old further claimed, ” You had the vest. I had the robes. I mean, Hunter did all the stuff, but at the end of the day, it was the tights and boots. But now, I mean the guys, everybody is just wearing their tees. What if you imagine, if you had be wearing your t-shirt, how many would you have sold? It is a true story. I hate to do this.”
He expressed that wrestlers should be unique and creative, and wearing their own merchandise to the ring won’t help. Flair had a grand entrance during his time and wore a robe to the ring. This created a different aura and mystique for him. But it can be argued that this also leads to more sales as wrestlers are essentially promoting their merchandise to millions of viewers across the globe.
Flair dropped truth bombs for Austin and opened his eyes, for a multi-million dollar idea. Austin himself sold massive amounts of merchandise and understood what Flair claimed. Maybe if Austin would’ve done what stars do right now in terms of sporting their merchandise, he could’ve made even more money.
