At WWE Fastlane, Big E retained the Intercontinental Championship in the most unorthodox fashion. While Apollo Crews had him rolled up in a small package, Big E sprang out of the move and got his shoulders off the mat, leading to referee Jessika Carr counting the pinfall. On SmackDown, Apollo avenged his loss and pinned the champion.

This led to a WrestleMania match being booked between Apollo Crews and Big E for the IC Title. After his win, Crews guaranteed a new IC Champion at WrestleMania in a backstage interview.

“Did you not just see what happened out there. Of course I have what it takes, and I know what everybody is saying, how many times Big E has beaten me. But no matter how many times you lose, what matters is what you do after that. And what am I going to do? I’m going to beat Big E, and I’m going to become Intercontinental Champion and finally have what is mine.

“For anybody, anyone of you who doubts me out there, just watch. Watch very closely and I see what I do. I will be Intercontinental Champion.”
