For the first few years of his career, Cena used to don jerseys and caps with a big chain in his neck and would cut promos while freestyling. He would verbally assault his opponents before actually fighting them.

The gimmick slowly faded away when the WWE went more in the direction of PG-13 and Cena became all about never giving up. Since then, Cena rarely visited back to this gimmick, and whenever he did, the WWE Universe loved it.

John Cena might get back in the ring

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘Pardon My Take‘, the 16-time World Champion details how his Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick has become a novelty in the pro-wrestling business.

The Champ further detailed that ever since he quit the gimmick and revisited it, the WWE Universe has loved it even more.

“Over the years, you’ve actually seen more of the good [version of] ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ than over the past 10 years. The appearance in the Firefly Funhouse match, the appearance at WrestleMania with Elias, it’s almost like that character has taken on a sense of nostalgia itself. So when it shows up, it’s a thing that gets people excited. So, never say never.”
