CM Punk has had a rough career ever since he joined AEW. If facing consistent bumps wasn’t enough, the wrestler also got fired from the promotion recently. And now, a clip has resurfaced on the internet, leaving a scar on his last match in AEW. What could have been a pleasant farewell victory for Punk is now coming out to be controversial.

A pro wrestling account on X recently posted a video of CM Punk getting beaten during his AEW All-In match at Wembley Stadium. Before getting to the part where Samoa Joe beats in his face in front of the announcer’s table, we can see Punk performing a rather dangerous and controversial act.

CM Punk was unable to hide this ugly secret of pro-wrestling

Although Punk stood victorious at the end of his match against Samoa Joe, the start wasn’t the most pleasant for him. The former UFC fighter received a beatdown from his opponent. Joe took charge and threw Punk over to the announcer’s table. The wrestler was lying there in pain for a good while before getting up and revealing his forehead busted open with blood. What fans had first considered an accidental wound has turned out to be something entirely else.

A fan standing ringside beside the announcer’s table recorded a video of Punk when he was lying down on the floor, at the foot of the table. The video shows us how the bleeding started. Contrary to what fans believed earlier, the bleeding didn’t happen due to the impact. Instead, it was a result of Punk using a small blade to stab his forehead to get some blood out.

This method is highly criticized by fans and pro wrestling management, with some promotions preventing blading due to censorship concerns. Due to the disturbing nature of the technique, it’s also looked down upon and has mostly left the wrestling scene. So, Punk getting exposed is a big deal for the wrestling industry itself and also for his prospects in other companies.

To understand the sensitivity of the situation better, let us take a brief look into the history of ‘blading’ in the pro wrestling industry.

The history of blading before CM Punk’s exposé

Despite not being an illegal act, blading is still frowned upon. The risks involved in the act tend to worsen the situation. Apart from health risks, with blood getting mingled with sweat and leading to infections for all involved, the practice can also become dangerous quick.

Eddie Guerrero‘s match serves as a prime example of why blading is not considered ideal to sell one’s match. During his Judgment Day match in 2004, Guerrero bladed himself after a steel chair shot to the head. The late wrestler had accidentally cut an ‘artery’, resulting in huge amounts of blood everywhere. The disgusting scenario not only haunted fans but Guerrero also felt its effects in the coming weeks. So, Punk reliving a risky moment could become a potential problem in his portfolio.

Either way, both his backstage altercations and the self-injury can prove to be a great hurdle for his future. Especially since his final altercation with Jack Perry was initiated by Perry wanting to use actual glass in a fight.
