When Kurt Angle made his WWE debut in 1999, his Olympic background set him apart from other wrestlers on the roster. It did not take very long for Angle to become a main event talent, as he won his first World Title less than a year after his debut. This success blazed a trail for other amateur wrestlers transitioning into professional wrestling, which paved the way for Brock Lesnar in 2002.
Lesnar’s imposing presence, considerable strength, and genuine amateur wrestling skills marked him as a force to be reckoned with from the beginning. This prompted curiosity within the locker room about who was the better wrestler between the two. Consequently, Angle and Lesnar engaged in a “tight” shoot wrestling match. In an interview, Angle disclosed the pressure he felt while facing Brock Lesnar.

Kurt Angle recalls the time he and Brock Lesnar engaged in a shoot wrestling match
There’s no denying that Kurt Angle was unrivaled in terms of tenacity and skills in the ring due to his legendary Olympic wrestling achievements. After all, he won an Olympic Gold Medal with a broken ‘freakin’ neck. However, Angle recently confessed that he felt weary about facing a guy like Brock Lesnar.

While speaking in the A&E documentary, Angle recalled wrestling Brock Lesnar in a shoot-wrestling match. According to him, it happened before a WWE show, when Lesnar was wrestling Big Show. Upon seeing how easily Lesnar was slamming Big Show, Angle was worried. But, in a bid to prove the genuineness of his Olympic Status, Angle entered the ring and took on Brock Lesnar.
He said, “I had to make sure I didn’t lose. We had a good competition. It was very tight. Brock’s a legitimate NCAA champion,” he continued, “did I beat him? Yes. But it wasn’t by much. If I would’ve lost to Brock, I would’ve gotten f*** for the rest of my career from the boys.”
Ultimately, Angle came out on top. However, as he mentioned, it was a closely contested match. The duo would then have an iconic rivalry in the WWE. One of the most memorable matches from their feud was their match at WrestleMania 19.
Off-topic, Kurt Angle recently recalled being one of the two people in WWE who made Lesnar tap out. Anyway, Angle once discussed how he would have fared in a shoot-fight with The Beast Incarnate.
Kurt Angle once stated that Brock Lesnar would have finished him in a shoot-fight
Unsurprisingly, Angle defeated Lesnar in a shoot-wrestling match, as Olympic-level athletes are way more technical than NCAA wrestlers. However, if it were a shoot-fight, the outcome would not have been the same.
