“A source with knowledge of the upcoming creative plans informed that Brock Lesnar was set to work with Dominik Mysterio at the Elimination Chamber in Perth.” What shortly followed was a scandal and Brock Lesnar’s removal from WWE’s plans in the foreseeable future. While Dominik Mysterio may have missed out on that fight, it seems like there’s another highly-anticipated match brewing for the 26-year-old. Especially considering what went down on SmackDown.

Dominik Mysterio’s natural ability to attract heat wherever he walks in made his transition from a stale character to a dynamic fan favorite quite seamless. But all this started with Dirty Dom doing his father dirty, building up the likelihood of WWE’s second-ever father-son rivalry.

Is another Dominik Mysterio vs. Rey Mysterio matchup loading?

Shortly after Rey Mysterio taught his son a lesson in a high-flying match at WrestleMania 39, WWE put the kibosh on their feud for some time. But we better believe the halt was only temporary as DomDom is clearly still not over his dad and is possibly eying to retreat at WrestleMania. On the latest SmackDown, Dominik Mysterio showed up in Rey Mysterio’s legendary mask and cost him the match against Santos Escobar!

Many suspected Dominick would split from the Judgement Day and join Escobar’s faction in a surprise move. However, he cleared the air during a backstage interview, highlighting Escobar and his feelings against Mysterio as their sole unifying factor and the reason for the latest assault on his father. That said, Dominik Mysterio’s timeline with his father has been quite a ride.

The former NXT North American Champion teamed up with the Master of 619 earlier in his career. But it didn’t lead him anywhere in the division. Later, WWE tipped him against his dad in a shocking turn of events during Clash at the Castle in 2022 before planting him in the villainous Judgement Day. This ushered in a career-defining era for the notorious Mysterio kid.

He gradually garnered all the fans’ attention through his constant tormenting antics against his dad with Mami by his side on WWE TV. This culminated in a grudge WrestleMania match between the father and son, with The Giant Killer having the upper hand. Although it seems just another regular storyline, their rivalry stands out with hilarious and unpredictable twists and turns. And fans think the bad blood didn’t flow back for nothing.

Fans believe a Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik rematch could end in Dom “taking over the Mysterio name”

With the WrestleMania 40 inching closer, the card looks all stacked up, featuring all the notable superstars of the division. That said, WWE has yet to set a match for the 26-year-old. He and JD McDonagh are the only Judgement Day stars with no definite WrestleMania plan. Considering this, it’s not absurd for fans to connect the dots.

They have their logic to believe WWE proceeds to set up a WrestleMania rematch between the iconic father-son pair before the 49-year-old elder Mysterio takes off his wrestling boots for good. Referencing Dirty Dom’s SmackDown antics, one fan wrote, “Dominik Mysterio has randomly decided to rekindle his feud with Rey Mysterio. Does anyone want Dom vs Rey 2?” Well, the answer to that question for most in the wrestling community is a resounding yes!

Last year, Rey Mysterio was asked when he thought it’d be the right time to walk away from the ring. He said, “I’m hoping that it can be within the next year and a half or two, maybe.” He was 48 back then, and a year and a half would be somewhere before he turns 50. Well, he’s 49 now. So, with every passing day, his retirement gets closer.

In light of this, one user expressed, “WE GETTING REY MYSTERIO VS DIRTY DOM II AT WRESTLEMANIA…” adding, “I’m not ready for Rey’s retirement.” However, as gutted as Rey’s fans would be to watch him finally hang up his boots, they’ve accepted that it has to come. Considering this, many anticipate a match between the father-son duo would end in Dominik retiring his father at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.

They wrote, “So we running back @DomMysterio35 vs @reymysterio for #WrestleMania as a likely retirement match?” As the idea of a Mysterio versus Dirty Dom rematch gained traction, so did speculations about the ‘why.’ A fan opined, “If they’re reviving the Rey vs Dom storyline, it’s definitely so Rey can retire, and Dom will actually take over the Mysterio name.”

Only time will tell if we will witness the magic of the heated Rey Mysterio-Dominik Mysterio feud at the grandest stage or if it’ll see the same fate as the reported Brock Lesnar vs. Mysterio match back at the Elimination Chamber. With all the hype around this possible rematch, though, a few fans weren’t too happy with DomDom for sneaking in on SmackDown out of nowhere.
