NXT Takeover: In Your House had one non-title match, but it had a ton of backstory. The rise of Xia Li and Tian Sha is noteworthy, and many view Xia as the next NXT Women’s Champion. At Takeover, women’s wrestling veteran Mercedes Martinez stood in her way.

Mercedes Martinez gets destroyed at Takeover

Xia and Mercedes went to war at Takeover, but one woman absolutely steamrolled the other. Li is a newcomer in this business, having debuted only in 2017. As for Martinez, she’s been in the wrestling business since 2000 and is one of the hardest working talents in the world.

Xia brought her A-game, dishing out a ton of offense as she sent Martinez reeling. However, the wily veteran fought her way back into the match, tossing Li into the LED board. She hit a big DDT for a near fall, but continued the attack on Li. She attempted the Air Raid Crash, but Li slipped out and hit a fatal blow.

A spinning kick from Li to Martinez’s face ended the night for the Latina sensation. However, the rest of Xia Li’s entourage did not think Martinez’s night was over. Xia grabbed a chair to assault Martinez some more, but she took control of the situation and turned the tables on Tian Sha.

She threatened to break Xia’s neck to get Mei Ying out of her chair. The spooky character rose from her seat as Martinez slowly approached her. Ying choked out Martinez by grabbing her by the throat and slamming her over a grate. As Mercedes landed in a nasty manner, we won’t see her for a while after tonight’s show.

NXT Women’s Championship match steals the show

If the Tian Sha/Mercedes Martinez segment didn’t shock you, the quality of the women’s title match will leave you gasping. In her second defense, Raquel Gonzalez smashed her way past a very game Ember Moon. The former champion showed she could go ten rounds with the larger Raquel and take her to the limit.

Dakota Kai obviously played her part in the match, swinging the momentum in Raquel’s favor. Meanwhile, Shotzi Blackheart also killed it in her role of chasing Kai around the ring. Moon hit a DDT on the entrance ramp and tried to get Raquel’s enormous frame into the ring. Unfortunately, she only picked up a two count.

Moon attempted the Eclipse, but Raquel caught her and hit her with Snake Eyes, an Undertaker special. The one-armed powerbomb finished the job for the women’s champion as she kept her title safe in a wonderful match.
