

Hulk Hogan has become one of the most important wrestlers in the history of the industry. One of the traits that catapulted him into superstardom was his dedication to portraying himself as an American Hero. His phrase, ‘train, say your prayers, and take your medicines’ became synonymous with the American dream of becoming great.
But once while doing a promotion tour for the continent that is a country as well, Australia, the Hulkster must have crossed a line or two. He praised their sport, which is a little out of character for an American Hero. But just as he betrayed WWE by moving to the WCW, Hogan might have switched again.

During his promotional tour in Australia, while promoting the New England Patriots, Hogan said, “I wish American football was as good as Australian football. I’ve never seen such athletes [Australian football players] run, take those big hits and keep getting up. And when I went back and watched American football, it was boring.”

American football is an organized team game, where the players have helmets and strict rules against violence on the field. However, Australian rules are different. The Australian football players don’t have any protective gear and it tends to be comparatively rougher. Thus, the wrestler seems to relish a more aggressive way of playing.
Hulk Hogan revamps himself
After a glorious career in the ’80s, Hogan was at the height of his career. But as the New Generation era was rolling around and Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels prospering, the popularity of the Hulkster was fading. So what did he do? He reinvented his character and wrestling image by shifting to a rival company.

Something similar took place when Hogan’s relevance was fading back in 2003. Stripping off the red and yellow colors, he donned a mask with the American flag’s colors on it and reinvented himself in WWE. He even had a pay-per-view match with Roddy Piper while wearing the mask. Being such a big American patriot, why would Hogan say something like that about one of the biggest sports in the country?
