Being a new employee in a strange setting leaves you prone to hazing from fellow employees. However, Adnan Virk probably received a verbal body shot from the United States Champion Sheamus on WWE Raw.

Prior to his match with Humberto Carillo for the United States Championship, the Celtic Warrior cut a scathing promo. He chided WWE’s handing out of title opportunities to people who don’t deserve them, even though he made an open challenge.

He claimed he doesn’t want to walk in the shadows of ‘has-beens’ when he can make a name for himself. Sheamus began making open challenges after winning the US Title at WrestleMania but has retained the title either by disqualification or by attacking his opponent before the match.

He insulted the previous champions for giving a title shot to anybody. He then insulted Adnan Virk by saying, “Even that fella Virk who’s out of his depth on commentary.”

Virk joined WWE after WrestleMania 37 but is an inexperienced commentator. Replacing Samoa Joe isn’t a straightforward job, especially since he’s one of the best in the business. However, Virk has shown promise and despite the shots, it looks like he’ll be as good as Michael Cole and Byron Saxton in a few weeks.

The person who introduced the concept of the United States Championship Open Challenge was John Cena. The former champion defeated Rusev [Miro] at WrestleMania 31 to win the title, and defended it every night on Raw. While many criticized Cena for burying Rusev at subsequent PPVs, you can’t argue he did a terrific job with the US Title.

Cena defended the title weekly against all new-comers, from former World Champions to NXT upstarts. He used the Open Challenge concept to begin rivalries with Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins in 2015 but also put over Alberto del Rio, who beat him for the title. Along the reign, Cena also put on television classics against the likes of Neville [Pac], Dean Ambrose [Jon Moxley], Cesaro, Sami Zayn and even Heath Slater.
