Ever since Cody Rhodes came back to WWE, he has been considered the top guy to dethrone Roman Reigns and finish his story at WrestleMania. Rhodes has repeatedly said that he came back to the company, to win the WWE Championship, something his legendary late father Dusty Rhodes never got to do. This has led to an obsession from Rhodes to “finish his story”. In fact, The American Nightmare seemingly came close to slaying Reigns at WrestleMania 39 but fell short as he was unable to end the story. However, the fans are still keeping a positive outlook for the 38-year-old, as they believe it will be only Cody Rhodes who can conquer The Tribal Chief.

After his WrestleMania defeat has been under intense scrutiny. The fans are anticipating the prospects for the 38-year-old and keep a close eye on how WWE might shape things up for the former Intercontinental champion. After his WrestleMania defeat, he took a detour from championship prospects and feuded with Brock Lesnar and is currently involved in a storyline with The Judgment Day and has even held the tag team titles in between. He has largely stayed away from Roman Reigns since WrestleMania and right now looks far away from finishing his story.

So, is Cody Rhodes finishing his story, not the direction WWE has in mind for him any longer? Let’s find out.

The current booking of Cody Rhodes might not do justice to his prospects

Rhodes absolutely nailed the landing as he settled his feud against ‘The Beast’ at SummerSlam. WWE perfectly booked the feud and made Rhodes look like a star once he came out of it on top. Rhodes then won the tag team titles against The Judgment Day as well, teaming up with Jey Uso.

Till now, things looked smooth for Cody Rhodes considering his story with Roman Reigns. Even in a recent episode of SmackDown, his stare down with the ‘Head of the Table’ teased a rematch down the line. But looking at the recent scenario and his unending feud with The Judgment Day, Rhodes’ story might deviate from the path. In between his beef with Brock Lesnar, Rhodes’ feud with The Judgement Day started to ignite. The proof of this is his match against Dominik Mysterio at Money in the Bank.

Since then, he has been under the radar of the wicked faction. Even for a guy getting groomed for WrestleMania, his upcoming match against Damien Priest might not do justice to his story. Due to this his involvement with the heel faction is keeping him away from the main track. Now there are even possibilities that the 38-year-old could continue this feud till Survivor Series. He might structure his own team to face The Judgement Day in Chicago. Now we have to see, if this is the right path for Rhodes or not.

Could LA Knight finish his story before Cody Rhodes?

No one even thought LA Knight could become a consistent hot topic in the WWE. Transitioning himself into an A-lister due to his in-ring charisma, Knight has surely raised the bar over the past few months. The fans started loving the 40-year-old and have been dreaming of an LA Knight title reign. The proof of this is an episode of SmackDown that happened a few weeks ago. Well, after getting positive for COVID, Knight had to miss that show, and as a result, WWE had to offer refunds to those who attended the show. In general, prominent figures and main eventers are the only ones granted this distinction.

Adding cherry on top, he helped and teamed up with John Cena and won a crucial tag team match against The Bloodline, the fans and pundits speculated that a title shot for ‘The Megastar’ was somewhere near. Now he has a shot at Roman Reigns’ title at Crown Jewel.

Just to let you know, the odds are not favoring Knight for his forthcoming match at Riyadh. There are high chance that Reigns will retain his title against his next adversary. But even if LA Knight doesn’t win the title at Crown Jewel, his in-ring charm has done a lot of work that could be a possible hurdle in the path of Cody Rhodes. Given the love of the fans for LA Knight, WWE might continue his story with Reigns which could lead to him winning the title soon.

This could effectively end the Reigns-Rhodes saga for now. Due to this Rhodes will have to wait for the ultimate opportunity of vengeance. Possibly, Knight might shatter the dreams of The American Nightmare. In fact, there is another major reason, that makes the scenario even more certain.

WWE might have a record-breaking plan for Roman Reigns

Hulk Hogan holds the record for the third-longest title reign in the history of the Stamford-based promotion. Well, he won the WWE title and held it for four long years. To be more precise with the numbers, the Hall of Famer held the WWE title for 1,474 days, which is the third longest so far.

Given his record, WWE might have a bigger plan for Roman Reigns. They might think of continuing the current run of Roman Reigns as a champion in order to break the record of The Hulkster. And for that, the plan might be to let Reigns retain his title at WrestleMania 40 next year. The Tribal Chief currently holds the record for being the longest-reigning Undisputed WWE Universal Champion since he has held the title for more than 1157 days and it might continue till WrestleMania next year.

Due to this, he will subsequently be closer to the record of Hulk Hogan by that time and since the company is known to push its stars to break the record of the legends, they might plan a triumph for Reigns at WrestleMania 40 against Cody Rhodes.

Also, For many WWE enthusiasts, this might be a shocker, considering the years of hard work Rhodes has put in to earn that spot. But looking at the reasons mentioned above, the road to end the story might be tough for Rhodes. Just to let you know, Reigns has even broken the record of legend Pedro Morales who held the major world title for 1027 days. Thus, he stands out as a possible candidate to be the third-longest WWE champion in history

Also, keep in mind a possible return of Dwayne Johnson to the mix. He could possibly start a feud with Reigns for WrestleMania 40. The 51-year-old even stated in an interview that he was open to wrestling Reigns at the Grandest Stage of Them All. Thus, the grand return of ‘The Great One’ might sideline Cody Rhodes’ story as well, and he could be the one to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.

All these scenarios remain possible, but with WWE’s focus on long-term storytelling, there is a good chance Rhodes may get to finish his story. Do you think WWE will keep Cody Rhodes on a collision course with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 or will there be a change in plans?
