WWE fans watching from that period know just how much of a star Shawn Michaels was pushed to be, and before all great rivalries of the modern era came to be, there was Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels, a rivalry that built up to one of the most controversial yet defining moments in WWE history.

The two big stars clashed with each other with everything. It wasn’t just the character, it was the pride and ego with it, the rivalry undoubtedly became personal.

“There was so much bad blood between us and I was always like, ‘If I see him, I’ll kill him’. I had so much anger about it,” Bret Hart heard saying, on the biography release trailer. That statement itself sums up just how bitter and real the rivalry was.

Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart’s rivalry went beyond the ring

‘The Hitman’ was the WWE Champion until the Montreal Screwjob saw him unfairly lose the title to Shawn Michaels in a controversial last-second ditch by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, who ordered the official to ring the bell in Michaels’ favor when Hart hadn’t tapped out to the Sharpshooter submission he was trapped in.

Needless to say, Shawn Michaels did go on to become the biggest star of his time. He was by far the biggest name in WWE, with achievements past his age but stardom has its lapses, and HBK couldn’t balance himself in the glam of it all.
