With the Universal Championship and the WWE Championship being the usual centers of attention, fans often tend to forget the prestige of the United States Championship. Notably, unlike all these championships, the U.S. title had first emerged in WCW. In the past, famous wrestlers and Hall of Famers alike fought over this renowned title. Now with its value seemingly diminishing, WWE has finally done something to capture the fan’s interest for the title again. With Sheamus at the helm, we could see something special.

On April 20, 2021, the current United States champion, Sheamus, took to Twitter and issued an open challenge for this US title. The tweet read, Open Challenge to anyone willing to step in the ring & take my #USTitle. ANYONE! tag a legit fella you think is stupid enough to have a go”

‘The Celtic Warrior’ posted a picture of himself holding the United States Championship on his shoulder. Sheamus’ open challenge is a statement to all that he is not afraid to face anyone in the ring. On the contrary, Sheamus, in his tweet, claims that anyone who dares step into the ring with him is stupid.

Sheamus Follows John Cena’s Footsteps

This tweet from Sheamus reminds us of another US title Open Challenge done years ago by another wrestler, and his name is John Cena. In 2015, WWE put the United States Championship on John Cena, hoping to raise the popularity and importance of the title and the contenders alike.

To their credit, the idea worked like a charm as the open challenge raised the forgotten reputation of the title and showed the audience a higher level of the mid-card wrestlers.

During Cena’s reigns as the US Champion, he faced multiple challengers, ranging from the top card wrestlers to the mid-card wrestlers. Cena was one of the biggest names in WWE and his popularity definitely helped set a higher standard for the title and the wrestlers as well. Along with his opponents, the open challenge also helped Cena develop his game.

Now with Sheamus issuing the open challenge, WWE can show what their young talents have to offer.
